This is a Vintage 1945 Signed Admiral Chester W. Nimitz WWII Victory Photograph which came out of a recent estate and it is in good display condition. It is a photograph of Nimitz inscribed and signed by the Admiral. In this photograph Nimitz is seated at the desk and standing behind him are General of the Army Douglas MacArthur, Admiral William F. Halsey, and Rear Admiral Forrest Sherman. This photograph was taken during the formal signing of the Japanese WWII surrender document. Captioned at the lower right is "The Japanese Surrender, U.S.S. Missouri, Tokyo Bay, 2 September 1945." It is signed: "To Oscar White with best wishes, C.W. Nimitz, Fleet Admiral, U.S. Navy." Oscar White was the last owner of the legendary Pach Brothers Photography Studio in New York. The Pach studio was the longest surviving photography studio in the U.S., opening in 1867 and closing in 1993. One of the Pach Brothers studied under Mathew Brady and Ulysses S. Grant helped the brothers obtain a loan to open their first studio. They became known as the "Photographers of the Presidents" having taken more Presidential portraits than any other photographers. Oscar White had taken a portrait of Admiral Nimitz and this picture was given to him in appreciation. A photograph of the same historic image inscribed by Admiral Nimitz to another recipient is available for $25,000 on The History for Sale web site and all of the pictured commanders are identified. The actual photograph measures 7-1/4"x9" and the frame measures 1/2"x15"x16".
